posters are fun

Have you ever been working on a project and realized 3.5 hours have passed in what seemed like 15 minutes? That was the case for a recent set of posters I did this past week. I am quite pleased with the outcome of both of them. In addition to the monthly poster, I also worked up a secondary one for a bigger show coming up. Check 'em out..

It's funny how I can start a project with one idea in mind and finish way off the mark. This evolved into a sort of 70's inspired movie poster after I went poking around on Da Font and stumbled across Pincoyablack. It started with an array of bright colors and somehow finished on spot red with the images converted to bw and set to darken in the effects panel. I sort of found myself in a little bit of a design rut with these posters after doing them for a while. I think this one broke away from that nicely.

This is clearly inspired by the Vaudeville or Victorian era posters. I've always been fascinated with the 1800's and its ornate detail. It's a look i'm comfortable working with and one that I am typically attracted to. A lot of layers and blending modes on this one. Some of that old paper texture we all love to use from time to time (probably more than I should). That red at the bottom was one of those delightful accidents. I had a hard time finishing this one off. While I was pleased with it, there was an overall drabness with no real elements standing out so I incorporated the red.
